The Best Horse Books For Kids – Get Them Reading

Do you have a horse crazy kid who wants to read? What are the best horse books for kids?

Many of us who are riders now, were once horse obsessed kids. I know that when I was a child, all I wanted was to live, breathe, ride, and of course, read about horses.

Check out this great list of the best horse books for kids.

These books are ordered according to the age groups they are suitable for. (Starting with the books best suited for younger children).

Every Cowgirl Needs a Horse

On Amazon, used from $1.10

This is a great horse book for young kids. Every Cowgirl Needs a Horse is the story of Nellie Sue who lives like a cowgirl, and just wants a horse. Her father announces that he is getting her a horse, which turns out to be a bicycle. The story shows the power of Nellie Sue’s imagination.

Best for preschool-kindergarten aged kids, 32 pages.

Horses and Ponies Ultimate Sticker Book

Available on Amazon from $6.88

Horses and Ponies Ultimate Sticker Book. This book has been updated several times since I was a kid, but I remember loving a book almost just like this as a child. It was so fun to have stickers of all these different horses because I adored all horses at that age. Now this updated version has reusable stickers so you can stick and unstick them multiple times. For just under $7, this book is a great value for any kid who loves horses.

32 pages, Suitable for grades kindergarten-2nd grade.

Unicorn Activity Book for Kids

On Amazon, from $4.02

Unicorn Activity Book. Not actually about horses, but this is great for horse loving kids. This book offers coloring, dot to dot, mazes and word searches to keep this horse book for kids interesting for hours.

Best suited for preschool through 3rd grade.

For Horse-Crazy Girls Only,

For Horse-Crazy Girls Only. This book is a great resource for teaching kids about horses. It includes educational information on horses as well as fun facts. The book includes factual information as well as horse jokes, important care information, lists of horse books and horse movies which is a fun resource for a horse loving kid!

160 Pages, best suited for grades 2-6.

The Black Stallion

This is such a classic book that it earns the top spot on this list for the best horse books for kids. The Black Stallion tells the story of a child named Alec, who is shipwrecked on a deserted island with a wild horse. This book explores his growing relationship with the black stallion and what happens after they are rescued.

Ideal for grades 3-7 (and anyone after grade 7!)

My Friend Flicka

My Friend Flicka, by Mary O'Hara.  One of the best horse books for kids.
My Friend Flicka, On Amazon, From $1.25

My Friend Flicka. This story follows a boy growing up on his family’s farm in Wyoming, named Ken McLaughlin. He spots a horse named Flicka, but Flicka is a wild horse who is going to be difficult to tame. This is one of the best horse books for kids because it explores the relationship between a horse and a boy as they learn to work together as Flicka’s wild sprit is tamed.

Suitable for grades 3-7, 352 pages.

Misty of Chincoteague

On Amazon, used from $.99

Misty of Chincoteague is the tale of a Chincoteague pony who seems uncatchable. A family really wants to purchase her, but then they are surprised by a foal accompanying the pony. This story shows the dedication it takes to get the horse you want.

Suitable for Grades 3-7, 176 Pages.

There is an 8 book boxed set available as well that includes Misty of Chincoteague plus the other books in the series.

National Velvet

National Velvet by Enid Bagnold.  One of the best horse books for kids.
National Velvet on Amazon, from $1.09

National Velvet is likely better known from the movie, and you should watch that too, but first – have your kid read the book! This is a wonderful tale of a young girl who wants to win the Grand National with her horse, Pie.

Suitable for grades 3-12, 320 pages.

Black Beauty

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell.  One of the best horse books for kids.
Black Beauty on Amazon, used from $1.13

Black Beauty is another undeniable classic horse book for kids. Black Beauty is a story told from the point of view of a horse about his life as a horse living in a country estate and then as a carriage horse. This book helps teach kids about treating everyone (especially animals) with kindness because horses have feelings too.

Suitable for grades 3 and up, 240 pages.

The Complete Book of Horses

On Amazon, from $14.04

This is a great horse book for kids who want to learn more about the care and riding of horses. The Complete Book of Horses includes information on breeds, tack, care, riding types, and more! A great resource to start learning about caring for horses.

Suitable for grades 3-adult, 512 pages.

Your young rider or horse enthusiast will enjoy any of these kids books about horses! Reading is so enjoyable and educational (especially for kids). So pick up some of these horse books for kids to keep them interested in reading.
